Excel & data
Power BI, from data to a useful dashboard
Build the model before the visuals, and keep the reporting question in view.
Practical skills. A clear purpose.
A dashboard is only as useful as the information behind it. This Power BI workshop connects data preparation, table relationships, DAX measures and visual design in one practical workflow. Participants work towards a report that answers a defined set of questions, with time to inspect totals, filtering behaviour and the meaning of each visual.
What you will practise
- Prepare source tables for a reporting model
- Explain how relationships affect a report
- Create and check measures for the questions being asked
- Design report pages with a clear reading order and useful filters
Inside the workshop
From understanding to application.
Define the report
Choose the audience, decisions and measures before deciding which charts to draw.
Prepare and connect the data
Clean source records, shape tables and establish relationships that support the analysis.
Calculate with context
Introduce appropriate DAX measures and inspect how filters affect the results.
Design and validate
Build readable pages, test totals against the source and review how someone else will use the report.
Who this is for
- Excel users moving into interactive reporting
- Analysts and staff responsible for programme or business reports
- Teams that need a clearer foundation for Power BI work
The final outline, duration, materials and account requirements are agreed in the proposal. Share your team’s starting point and a suitable example of the work you want to improve.
Good questions
Before the session.
Is this Microsoft certification preparation?
This is practical workplace training. It does not claim to award a Microsoft certification or to be a dedicated PL-300 exam preparation programme.
Do participants need to know DAX already?
Not for a foundations workshop. The appropriate level is agreed before delivery, and existing spreadsheet experience is helpful.
Does the workshop include publishing to our organisation?
Publishing and sharing requirements depend on your licences, workspace access and internal policies. Discuss them during planning; a workshop does not automatically include a production deployment.
