The reporting need
Participant records, programme activity, assessment and trainer observations needed a consistent structure for reporting.
The design needed to recognise that different questions call for different views. A management overview, a participant profile and a record of programme feedback serve related but distinct purposes.
The development work
My role covered the preparation and organisation of Excel records, relationships between reporting tables, DAX measures and the design of the Power BI report pages.
- Prepare and organise source records in Excel.
- Establish relationships between the tables used in the report.
- Develop DAX measures and design report pages around the programme’s reporting needs.
The reporting structure was shaped around the programme’s information, with each view given a clear role rather than placing every record on one page.
Five perspectives on one programme
The following describes the information architecture of the reporting project.
Executive overview
A consolidated perspective on programme status and indicators for management review.
Programme monitoring
A view of programmes, modules, activities and assessments in their reporting context.
Participant profiles
A structured perspective on participant backgrounds and involvement in the programme.
Performance & scoring
Measures and reporting views for character assessments and scores.
Trainer feedback
Observations organised at programme or module level, alongside the other reporting perspectives.
The principle behind the work
A dashboard starts before the visual. Source records need a consistent structure, relationships need to reflect what the data means, and each measure needs a useful question behind it.
It is a principle I also bring into data training: begin with the reporting need, understand the source, and build the model before choosing the chart.
This case study describes the development scope. Participant records and internal report screens are not published here. It does not claim a measured improvement or a production deployment.
